Goal:

Teach your dog to catch - It's fun and super useful for training!

  1. First, choose a large and light treat that's easy for your dog to see and catch. This could be popcorn, a piece of bread, or something else your dog loves. Practice 10 reps at least once a day. It could take a day, a week or even a month. Just keep playing the game, like young chidren, your puppy is developing and motor skills! As they get older they get better!
  2. Ask your dog to sit. Say the word "CATCH" and raise the treat over your dogs head lower the treat into your dog's mouth. Increase the speed a little each time. Do this 5 to 10 times or until you see that your dog starts to open its mouth as treat is imminent.
  3. After your dog gets the hang of this, try gently tossing the treat towards their nose, like you're underhand throwing a softball. Make sure to say Catch first, and then toss the treat. "CATCH."
  4. If your dog misses the treat and it falls to the ground, quickly pick it up before they can. You could have a friend or another dog help fetch the treat if needed.
  5. Keep practicing this until your dog starts catching the treat. You can make it more exciting by trying it in different situations, like when your dog is walking next to you, standing in front of you, or lying on their mat.
  6. This fun game is a great way to reward your dog from a distance!
  7. Once your dog is a pro at catching treats, you can try the same steps with a ball or a toy.

Remember, the goal is for your dog to have fun while learning a new skill, so be patient and make sure to celebrate their successes!

Pro Tip: Use snacks that are light and gat a bit of loft when you toss them. Things like: Popcorn Pieces of health bread Cheerios
