Homework: 'POSITIONS' Transition Training
The goal of this homework is to help your puppy fluidly move between the 'Sit', 'Down', and 'Stand' positions. This exercise builds on their understanding of these fundamental commands by introducing transitions from one position to another.
Sit Position
- To lure your puppy into a 'Sit' from either standing or laying down, hold a treat close to their nose. Slowly raise it above and behind their head. This encourages your puppy to look up and naturally shift into a sitting position.
- The moment their rear touches the floor, say "Yes!" to mark the behavior and then immediately give them the treat.
Down Position
- Start with your puppy in the 'Sit' position. Holding a treat at their nose level, gently guide it down to the floor, leading them to lie down.
- When your puppy's elbows touch the floor, again mark with a "Yes!" and reward them with the treat.
Stand Position
- To guide your puppy into a 'Stand', hold your open hand in front of their face and slowly pull it away. If they don’t respond, conceal a treat between your fingers, letting them see and smell it, and then pull your hand away to encourage standing.
- Ensure you reward only when your puppy fully stands up.
Transitional Movements Homework
- Practice transitioning between positions in the following order:
- 'Sit' from 'Down'
- 'Sit' from 'Stand'
- 'Down' from 'Sit'
- 'Down' from 'Stand'
